"Black metal is the music of our resistance and protest against the system of confining and destroying our pagan identity and the identity of White peoples."
-- Rob Darken, Graveland

The report issued by the SPLC regarding black metal does an above-average job of addressing the genre historically but fails to realize the implications of historical consistency in metal. Where the SPLC report alleges black metal has become a "tool" for National Socialists where the truth is more that as a logical part of its extension black metal has discovered National Socialism.

This approach is similar to that of other social doctrine, which preaches an evil to avoid and a conformity to uphold, and it has equally failed the younger generations as have earlier attempts at social control. For this reason, movements such as NSBM exist which refute the basic ideas of social thinking in the centrally-accepted paradigm. This is part of the continuing mission of metal to oppose social conformity and paradigm-based thinking.

History has changed around metal, and metal has come about face on many views because of changing social and cultural circumstance. In 1969, when Black Sabbath cut the first metal tracks recorded, an overflow of hippie-induced good feeling had almost obliterated the counterculture. Punk and metal bands formed an alienated culture of self-reliance during the heavy propaganda and nuclear terror of the cold war, getting beyond the desire for "peace" to the desire for political accuracy.

By the mid-1980s, when black metal evolved, metal had taken the extreme occult views of Black Sabbath and used them as a basis for spiritual dissidence from Judeo-Christian social thinking as a whole. During this time outspoken death metal bands became the focus of press attention designed to minimize underground Satanic and Pagan ideals.

The "furthest extreme" of Satanism had been over the top with Slayer, but was so ingrained in bands like Deicide, Possessed, and Incantation that it represented a cultural shift from political thinking toward a spiritual representation of the individual from which political orientation was evident. As death and black metal grew, it incorporated this interest into a study of ancient peoples and their spirituality, and from this, the multiculturalism of National Socialism.

We might call it "multiculturalism" because what National Socialism requests for the Indo-Aryan peoples is only what liberal America has requested for blacks, Native Americans and Hispanics: a chance to define their own culture and not be assimilated; a chance to be treated equally as others. The same commercial culture that adulterates the American public into couch potatoes is assaulting the youth of Europe, Asia, India and other homes of non-American cultures.

"It would be lovely if we lived in a free country, but we don't. People who aren't mad about it should be ashamed of themselves."
- Politically Incorrect's Bill Maher

The polarization of the American voter has allowed politics to once again create a "big good" and a "big evil" with which to sway voters. Associate anything with the "big evil" and voters will swing the other way in a desperate attempt to be "good." Currently, our society preaches a good deal of racial justice after ignoring it for centuries, as overcompensation a way to think ourselves "good" and "noble" for our martyr's sacrifice.

Metal rebukes this style of thinking, and attempts to address it behind the ways in which it manifests itself - socially, politically, symbologically. Metal music has addressed anger through three generations and directed politicized resentment into action against the mental paradigm of material thinking. The outgrowth of National Socialism in black metal is a natural part of this process. The proof of this is that black metal had no overt mention of fascism - excepting the standards inherent in metal - for almost ten years.

Where society pushes for conformity, metal rebels. Here it rebels against what it sees as a destruction of traditional Indo-European cultures through commercial society, and the moral justification supporting it which most experts agree is derived from Judeo-Christian principles. Here we must, as one reporter mentioned, quote from Nietzsche:

One will have divined already how easily the priestly mode of valuation can branch off from the knightly-aristocratic and then develop into its opposite; this is particularly likely when the priestly caste and the warrior caste are in jealous opposition to one another and are unwilling to come to terms. The knightly-aristocratic value judgements presupposed a powerful physicality, a flourishing, abundant, even overflowing health, together with that which serves to preserve it: war, adventure, hunting, dancing, war games, and in general all that involves vigorous, free, joyful activity. The priestly-noble mode of valuation presupposes, as we have seen, other things: it is disadvantageous for it when it comes to war! As is well known, the priests are the most evil enemies -- but why? Because they are the most impotent. It is because of their impotence that in them hatred grows to monstrous and uncanny proportions, to the most spiritual and poisonous kind of hatred. The truly great haters in world history have always been priests; likewise the most ingenious haters: other kinds of spirit hardly come into consideration when compared with the spirit of priestly vengefulness. Human history would be altogether too stupid a thing without the spirit that the impotent have introduced into it -- let us take at once the most notable example.

All that has been done on earth against "the noble," "the powerful," "the masters," "the rulers," fades into nothing compared with what the Jews have done against them; the Jews, that priestly people, who in opposing their enemies and conquerors were ultimately satisfied with nothing less than a radical revaluation of their enemies' values, that is to say, an act of the most spiritual revenge. For this alone was appropriate to a priestly people, the people embodying the most deeply repressed priestly vengefulness. It was the Jews who, with awe-inspiring consistency, dared to invert the aristocratic value-equation (good = noble = powerful = beautiful = happy = beloved of God) and to hang on to this inversion with their teeth, the teeth of the most abysmal hatred (the hatred of impotence), saying "the wretched alone are the good; the poor, impotent, lowly alone are the good; the suffering, deprived, sick, ugly alone are pious, alone are blessed by God, blessedness is for them alone -- and you, the powerful and noble, are on the contrary the evil, the cruel, the lustful, the insatiable, the godless to all eternity; and you shall be in all eternity the unblessed, accursed, and damned!" . . . One knows who inherited this Jewish revaluation . . . In connection with the tremendous and immeasurably fateful initiative provided by the Jews through this most fundamental of all declarations of war, I recall the proposition I arrived at on a previous occasion (Beyond Good and Evil, section 195) -- that with the Jews there begins the slave revolt in morality: that revolt which has a history of two thousand years behind it and which we no longer see because it -- has been victorious. - F.W. Nietzsche, the Geneaology of Morals, Chp. 7

Nietzsche hoped to deliver humankind from morality and produce a new willpower which would enable people to live to the fullest of their being. Like black metal, it "sounds" grim and terrible but encloses some beautiful truths. Like black metal also, it was shunned in its time and persecuted especially after its use in WWII gave rise to association with National Socialist ideologies.

SPLC tells us that Nazism and Fascism are dangerous "group think" which must be persecuted or we will catch them like a disease. Group-think by your definition would be an overwhelmingly popular, easy truth. By a look at society today, this is clearly not the case with National Socialism, which remains persecuted in a society more obsessed over John Rocker's opinions of blacks than quality schooling in the inner city. Our guilt is obvious, and our frustration is great, so we look for a scapegoat. That is straight from SPLC doctrine about racists, but it applies to the SPLC.

In many ways metal is similar: it will not tolerate group-think. And that to you is a warning sign that in your zealous drive against "evil" you are covering a desire for control, one that is insidious and respects no culture. Your culture is that of commerce and its moral justice. The current generations, and black metal, reject that idea and have named your lies. What did you expect - but WAR?
